Canary & Balearic Resident Flight Discount: How It Works

If you live in the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta or Melilla, you are entitled to a subsidy of up to 75 % on flights between your territory and the rest of Spain, as well as on inter-island routes. This is the resident discount, and applied correctly it means huge savings over the year. This guide explains who qualifies, which flights it covers and how to prove your residency without surprises.

What is the resident discount?

It is a public subsidy on the ticket price for people who prove their residency in Spain's non-mainland territories. It applies to the fare (plus part of the taxes and charges, according to current regulations) and is reflected directly in the price you pay when booking.

The percentage and conditions are set by national regulations and may be updated. Always confirm the current detail with the official source before buying.

Who qualifies?

Generally, those who can benefit are:

• Residents of the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla who are citizens of Spain, the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, plus other cases covered by the regulations.
• Residency must be officially accredited (municipal registration and residency certificate).

Which flights does it cover?

• Routes between your territory of residence and the rest of national territory (for example, Palma-Madrid or Tenerife-Barcelona).
• Inter-island routes within the archipelago.

It does not apply to international flights. For a trip abroad departing from the islands, the discount would cover, where applicable, only the qualifying domestic leg.

How do you prove residency?

The usual route today is electronic verification: when booking you provide your details and the system automatically checks your resident status with the Administration (the well-known SARA system). If automatic verification is not possible, you will be asked for a valid residency certificate issued by your town hall.

Tips so it doesn't fail:

• Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your ID document.
• Keep a recent residency certificate handy in case automatic verification doesn't match.
• Check that the discount appears reflected before completing payment.
