Which Caribbean or Latin American destination suits your budget? The quick answer: on a tight budget, Bogotá and Medellín give you the most trip per euro; in the mid range, Cartagena de Indias combines a colonial city with beaches; and if you want the all-inclusive resort experience, Punta Cana and Cancún concentrate the best offers, with Havana as the special case that requires adding paperwork to the budget. Which destination should you choose for your budget?

The summary table, from lowest to highest orientative total cost (flight + 7 nights, per person, mid season):

All figures are orientative and for mid season: in high season they all rise, and with the right one-off deal any of them can slip into the lower band. The correct reading is not "which is cheapest in absolute terms" but what your budget buys you in each place. Destination by destination.

Tight budget: why do Bogotá and Medellín stretch so far?

Because on-the-ground costs are low and the product is urban: you do not depend on a resort. Once the flight is paid — the big line item — daily life in Colombia (eating very well, getting around, museums, day trips) clearly costs less than in the Caribbean resort zones.

• Bogotá: the cultural capital — the Gold Museum, Monserrate hill, La Candelaria and a serious food scene. A perfect 2-4 night base.
• Medellín: the "eternal spring" (20-25 °C all year), Comuna 13, Peñol-Guatapé as a day trip, and a tourism infrastructure that has matured enormously.

Mid range: Cartagena de Indias, the balance

Cartagena is the near-perfect middle ground: a UNESCO-listed walled city, sunsets over the Caribbean, top-tier food and the Rosario Islands' beaches a boat ride away. It costs more than Bogotá or Medellín (it is an established international destination and the old-town hotels show it), but it stays below the total spend of a premium resort week.

Agency trick: the historic centre's boutique hotels inflate budgets fast; the Getsemaní and Bocagrande neighbourhoods offer more reasonable alternatives 10-15 minutes' walk from the walls.

All-inclusive beach: Punta Cana and Cancún

If your idea of a holiday is not having to think, this is the product: all-inclusive with food, drinks and entertainment covered around the clock. The budget concentrates in the package (which is why it should be compared as a whole, not in pieces) and on-the-ground spending can be close to zero.

A budget note: the all-inclusive spread is enormous (3★ to 5★ luxury). The most cost-effective quality jump is usually from 3★ to upper 4★; beyond that you are paying for brand and location. And the second trick that rescues the most budgets: at these two destinations, the month picks the price. The same room can cost 30-40% less (orientative) in May or September than at Christmas — so if your dates are flexible, start there before downgrading your hotel category.

Havana: the special case

Havana is not expensive because of the hotel or the flight, but because of what must be added: the eVisa required since 2025, the medical insurance demanded for entry, and day-to-day spending where tourists pay in hard currency at less predictable prices than in other destinations. Is it worth it? For the traveller drawn to it, absolutely: no other destination compares. But it is a culture-and-streets trip, not a resort trip — if you are after endless beach and poolside cocktails, your money goes further in Punta Cana.

Full package or booking separately?

Our experience, destination by destination: in Punta Cana and Cancún, the package wins almost every time — operators move huge volumes with the resorts and you will not get those rates on your own.
